U-factor, the insulation number
U-factor measures how fast heat moves through the window. Lower insulates better, with values generally running from about 0.15 to 1.1. This is the number that matters on a January morning at altitude, when the overnight low is genuinely cold.
New Mexico falls in the ENERGY STAR South-Central climate zone, and under the Version 7.0 specification that zone's maximum U-factor is 0.28. That is a useful benchmark to hold any quoted product against.
What low emissivity coating actually does
A low emissivity coating is a nearly invisible metallic layer on one or more glass surfaces that reflects infrared radiation back where it came from: heat out in summer, heat in during winter, while still letting visible light through. That is the whole trick, and it is why low emissivity windows reflect heat while allowing natural light rather than simply going dark.

The sun side is not the whole house.
Orientation changes the answer per opening. A north-facing bedroom window and a west-facing living room slider have almost nothing in common in what they need, and specifying the whole house off one number is how people end up disappointed with an expensive project.
- South and west openings. Take the heaviest solar load. This is where a low SHGC earns its money, and where fading shows up first on floors and upholstery.
- North openings. Little direct solar gain, so insulation matters more than solar control here.
- Large glass areas. Patio sliders and picture windows concentrate everything described above into one place, which is why they are usually the first complaint.
- Shaded openings. Under a portal or a mature tree, the priorities change again. A good estimate accounts for that instead of ignoring it.
